Summary

Frances is a coolheaded and darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin。 Her best friend is the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi。 At a local poetry performance one night, they meet a well-known photographer, and as the girls are then gradually drawn into her world, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman's sophisticated home and handsome husband, Nick。 But however amusing Frances and Nick's flirtation seems at first, it begins to give way to a strange--and then painful--intimacy。

Written with gemlike precision and marked by a sly sense of humor, Conversations with Friends is wonderfully alive to the pleasures and dangers of youth, and the messy edges of female friendship。

I enjoyed Normal People so I thought I'd give this a go with a show being made for it and all。 I just wasn't super into the plot。 2 stars because I still enjoy Rooney's writing style and it was a quick and easy read。 I enjoyed Normal People so I thought I'd give this a go with a show being made for it and all。 I just wasn't super into the plot。 2 stars because I still enjoy Rooney's writing style and it was a quick and easy read。 。。。more

I think that if I read this first instead of normal people I would have given this a 5 stars and normal people a 4 stars, but I did not do that。

Kat Thanopoulos

Easy 5 stars。 This is definitely a new favorite of mine。

Yeah, it's a hard pass from me。 Four unlikeable characters who just go around in circles for 321 pages。 Yeah, it's a hard pass from me。 Four unlikeable characters who just go around in circles for 321 pages。 。。。more

Came into this sceptical off the back of feeling let down by Normal People, but several people recommended this as the better book and I am so glad I picked it up。 In a way, there’s a part of me which relates to Frances, Bobbi, Nick and even Melissa, connecting with the best and the worst parts of their characters。 And the ending!

This is one of the books that changes how you perceive the world and the people around you。 “Rearranges your insides” as someone called it。 I loved every piece of it。

Caterina Romiti

Awkward characters in awkward relationships, but with good dialogues and, all in all, well written。

I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and find her very talented from the two books of hers that I have read, but similarly to her other novel, Normal People, the characters aren’t particularly likable which makes it hard to have many feelings about them or an attachment/investment to the story。

I loved Normal People so much and this didn't come anywhere close for me! Rooney's style is unmistakable (complete with tropes like the holiday villa in France/Italy lol) and she definitely captures "millennial malaise" well。 But I agree with another reviewer who says "it's a character-driven novel and the characters were a problem"。 I thought there was so much to unpack about Marianne and Connell in Normal People that I wanted to re-read it and write about it (I never ended up doing that)。 Conv I loved Normal People so much and this didn't come anywhere close for me! There’s something about Sally Rooney’s main characters that speaks to me。 I felt it with Marianne in Normal People and then with Frances (occasionally) in Conversations With Friends。I think what I really liked about this one is that it’s all wrong, obviously。 There are so many morally incorrect things these characters do。 But because that’s the whole premise of the story & the characters are constantly having conversations of moral correctness (what it is/isn’t) and as they say - the systems tha There’s something about Sally Rooney’s main characters that speaks to me。 I felt it with Marianne in Normal People and then with Frances (occasionally) in Conversations With Friends。I think what I really liked about this one is that it’s all wrong, obviously。 There are so many morally incorrect things these characters do。 But because that’s the whole premise of the story & the characters are constantly having conversations of moral correctness (what it is/isn’t) and as they say - the systems that are created to benefit men and a patriarchal society - it’s hard to not understand where they’re coming from and maybe even (sometimes) excuse their actions。And the thing is, I’m not saying it’s right。 But when you look at the title of the book & the beliefs all the characters have about their own relationships, lives and what is or isn’t right etc。 you just go 。。。 WELL they like living like this and they don’t seem to have major issues over it sooooo。。。enjoy????This is definitely a weird enjoyable read。 And that final line? I cackled。TW // self harm, possible eating disorder, mention of infertility, depression, alcoholism, body acceptance issues 。。。more

Fantastic。 Read it in less than 24 hours。 Not my usual genre, but I am definitely into a book that surprises me now and again。 I’ve been feeling easily distracted lately when reading, but this book consumed me as I consumed it。

I would give this five stars but the sheer amount of social anxiety this book gave me made me doc a point

Well, for starters, I must say I LIVE for Sally Rooney’s writing。 That being said, my only problem with this book was the main character, Frances。 She’s self centered and sometimes annoying。 As to expect, the book got a little boring for that reason。 Furthermore, I enjoyed the book and the plot。 It took me a little while to actually get into it, but once I started to understand the concept of the book and what it is REALLY about, I started to enjoy it。 By all means, this book brings good reflect Well, for starters, I must say I LIVE for Sally Rooney’s writing。 That being said, my only problem with this book was the main character, Frances。 She’s self centered and sometimes annoying。 As to expect, the book got a little boring for that reason。 Furthermore, I enjoyed the book and the plot。 It took me a little while to actually get into it, but once I started to understand the concept of the book and what it is REALLY about, I started to enjoy it。 By all means, this book brings good reflections around coming of age, friendship and specially society’s moral values (made me ask myself if these values were really moral or just capitalism friendly 🧏🏼‍♀️)。 Overall, I enjoyed the read, but wouldn’t say I fully enjoyed the book the whole time I was reading it 🤯 。。。more

Did not like It。Simple writing style like many of us did in highschool, no touch of magic。Unlikable heros and no real development。

I am a huge fan of Sally Rooney's writing。 So no doubt about me liking this one。 After Normal People this book did feel very familir wrt characters but nonetheless I loved it。 Sometimes its good to feel relevant and relatable to the characters you read about, a time to acknowledge and accept that its okay to be flawed and vulnerable。 That we are not alone。If you like character driven stories, here is one for you :) I am a huge fan of Sally Rooney's writing。 So no doubt about me liking this one。 After Normal People this book did feel very familir wrt characters but nonetheless I loved it。 Sometimes its good to feel relevant and relatable to the characters you read about, a time to acknowledge and accept that its okay to be flawed and vulnerable。 That we are not alone。If you like character driven stories, here is one for you :) 。。。more

Much like Normal People, this book managed to get me interested in characters I did not particularly like or agree with。 The author manages to create a very complex and in depth portrait of Frances and the people around her, and by telling the story from her perspective, I was left wondering what the other characters may be thinking and feeling behind the scenes。 I really enjoyed the story even if it was not a "beautiful" story。 The characters seem real, like people you would know, and you want Much like Normal People, this book managed to get me interested in characters I did not particularly like or agree with。 The author manages to create a very complex and in depth portrait of Frances and the people around her, and by telling the story from her perspective, I was left wondering what the other characters may be thinking and feeling behind the scenes。 I really enjoyed the story even if it was not a "beautiful" story。 The characters seem real, like people you would know, and you want to learn as much about them as you can。 I really enjoyed the writing style and how natural the dialogue felt。 。。。more

Conversation with Friends gently, effortlessly, loudly conveys that we do not have to constrain ourselves to the societal norms and structures others have placed upon us, that we as human beings have freedom and choice to live by our own means。

Sally Rooney once again GUTTED me with her prose。 She has such a nuanced, emotive voice when it comes to modern relationships of all sorts。 I adored Normal People for this reason, and CwF did not disappoint on this front。“What is a friend?” “What is a conversation?” are the questions that are at the center of this novel with no real answer, as there is no real answer。 Rooney masterfully delves into the complexities, pleasures, and painful intimacies of the relationships of the four central chara Sally Rooney once again GUTTED me with her prose。 She has such a nuanced, emotive voice when it comes to modern relationships of all sorts。 I adored Normal People for this reason, and CwF did not disappoint on this front。“What is a friend?” “What is a conversation?” are the questions that are at the center of this novel with no real answer, as there is no real answer。 Rooney masterfully delves into the complexities, pleasures, and painful intimacies of the relationships of the four central characters。This was so close to a 5 for me, but it was difficult relating or caring about most of the characters for the majority of the novel (except for Frances)。 Most did have redeemable qualities at the end through their conversations。 Ah who knows, maybe I’ll go back and rate it a 5。 Recommend this to everyone。 It will make you laugh and cry (sometimes simultaneously), you’ll probably have a whateverpoint life crisis while reading it, but at the end, you will be so grateful that Sally Rooney became a writer and let us into her stories。 。。。more

This is the first novel by Sally Rooney that I have ever read, which is probably unusual as I am aware that she is an extremely popular author。 This was selected for the #inwiththeoldbookclub on Instagram。Some positives: a straightforward, chatty tone which feels like an old friend telling you a story; a quick read that you can pick up and put down without completely losing the thread as can happen with a complex storyline (my attention span isn’t what it once was)。Some negatives: I just didn’t This is the first novel by Sally Rooney that I have ever read, which is probably unusual as I am aware that she is an extremely popular author。 This was selected for the #inwiththeoldbookclub on Instagram。Some positives: a straightforward, chatty tone which feels like an old friend telling you a story; a quick read that you can pick up and put down without completely losing the thread as can happen with a complex storyline (my attention span isn’t what it once was)。Some negatives: I just didn’t find the characters that likeable or interesting and they did things I just couldn’t understand。 It felt like the relationship with Frances’ parents was just thrown in there without much context and it didn’t add to the story。Overall, it was just OK and I don’t think I would bother looking for any other books from this author。 。。。more
